A
New Jersey angler won
a second straight out-of-state
ASA Tournament, but
this time it was ASA
veteran Joe Vezzosi
of Point Pleasant with
his Undisputed
a 33-foot Contender
from Ocean Beach Marine
who bested local pros
at the Oct. 14-15 Montauk
contest. Vezzosi and
Dan Garcia from Hackensack
fished dead bunkers
at Valiant Rock, near
The Race, to weigh a
30.5-pound bass the
first day. That left
them well back in eighth
place. Previous ASA
winner William Gavitt
got off to a great start
on Allure with a 43.7-pounder.
David Johnson was a
solid second at 41 pounds
with Hang On. Other
close contenders were
Richard Nesse on Nasty
Neese at 37.2 pounds;
Ray Draves aboard Renegade
at 35.5 pounds; Mike
Lundholm on Metalica
with a 35.4-pounder;
Harry Svenson of Union
Beach, N.J. (winner
of the previous tournament
at Old Saybrook, Ct.)
at 32.7 pounds on Cheap
Shot; Lance Rowe on
Rockhound with a 32.25-pounder;
and Don McNally at 31.15
pounds on Mary Sea.
Undisputed
caught two 40-pounders
Sunday, and the one
they weighed was 46.85
pounds. That vaulted
them into first with
76.35 pounds when Gavitt
couldnt do any
better than a 27.05-pound
bass that dropped him
into fourth place with
a 70.75-pound total
-- and Johnsons
best of 34.7 pounds
left him just ounces
behind in second place
with a 75.7-pound total
though Jennifer Johnson
won the Lady Angler
award.
Lundholm
held onto third with
a 37.25-pound striper
for a 72.65-pound total.
The other two first
day contenders also
failed to come up with
a large matching bass.
Neese only had a 23.65-pounder
to fall back to seventh
with a total of 60.85
pounds, while Draves
managed a 30.4-pounder
and a fifth place 65.9-pound
total. Svenson failed
to repeat his Old Saybook
win as Sundays
24.05-pounder dropped
him back to 10th with
a 56.75-pound total.
Rick Nunn was the only
entrant besides Vezzosi
and Lindholm who did
better the second day,
adding 36.95-pounder
on his Hapi Daze to
the Saturday 22.1-pounder
for an eighth place
39.05 pounds. McNally
was just a bit off Saturdays
catch with a 30.1-pounder
and a sixth place finish
at 61.25 pounds. Rowes
24.75-pound bass left
him with a 57-pound
total and ninth place.
Svenson
donated $500 from his
Connecticut win for
the Junior Angler winner,
and that went to Tyler
Weiss on Nasty Nesse.
At the Friday night
captains meeting, Svenson
was presented with a
custom Rolex watch from
Fountain Powerboats
as a member of the Team
Fountain Fishing Team
for winning the Ocean
Performance Bass Blast
at Old Saybrook.
